The N.C. Department of Transportation will begin the widening of I-40 between Wade Avenue and Jones Franklin Road beginning July 2009. This project will affect traffic surrounding the RBC Center and is expected to be completed by June 2011. I-40 will expand from the present four lanes to six lanes. Please note that alternate traffic patterns and lanes will be used during the improvement phase. However, lane closures will be limited between 9 p.m. and 6 a.m. Monday through Friday and slightly later on weekends to reduce the inconvenience to motorists in the construction area. These improvements are aimed at reducing congestion and improving traffic flow through one of the most congested areas in the Triangle.
NCDOT reminds motorists to watch signs for construction information, stay alert and obey the posted speed limit. Plan ahead before driving, by visiting the NCDOT Traveler Information Management Web site at www.ncdot.gov/traffictravel or call 511, the state’s free travel information line for current travel conditions.
